Middle School (Grades 6-8) - July 18-23, 2010
Philosophy:
We help campers enjoy and strengthen a solid base of musical knowledge. Additional attention is given to the acquisition of knowledge on their specific instrument and to broaden their definition of "music." We create a positive, safe and fun learning environment that assists the camper in meeting and making friends. Our philosophy is designed to nurture the whole camper with a focus on fun.
During the course of the week there is some variation to our camp's routine. We try to create a balance of music and other activities. There is so much more to camp than music!
A Typical Day
- Breakfast
- Morning Band Rehearsal
- Music Class (Theory, Explore Music, etc.)
- Lunch
- Band Rehearsal
- Break (art time, bookstore trips, recreation center, etc., supervised by staff)
- Chamber Music (one for each family of instrument or Jazz Ensemble)
- Dinner/Free Time (planned activities to choose from; supervised by staff)
- Rehearsal or Similar Instrument Sectional
- Evening Recital (different each night)
- Free Time (swimming, movies, games and others to choose from, supervised by staff)
- Bed Check/Lights Out
Camp Director
Dr. Glenn C. Hayes, is in his 22nd year as Director of Bands at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He is a widely sought-after clinician who contributes significantly to the region’s level of music. His responsibilities include conducting several UW-Whitewater ensembles as well as music education instruction. His goal is to create an energetic musical opportunity for campers and help them become lifelong lovers of music. His primary conducting teachers have been John P. Paynter and Norman C. Dietz. He has also studied privately with Elizabeth A. H. Green and Philip Greenburg. Dr. Hayes earned his undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University and master/doctoral degrees from Northwestern University.
Guest Conductor
Kati Seiter, is the band director at Washington Junior High School in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Kati teaches band and jazz band to seventh, eighth, and ninth graders as well as lessons to seventh grade through the high school level. She is also the assistant marching band director at Lincoln High School in Manitowoc. She is a strong advocate and implements the Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) model in her teaching. When not teaching, Kati plays oboe and English horn in the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra, oboe in the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra, and is a member of WYBDA, WMEA, and MENC. Kati completed her Bachelors of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2002 and has begun her study for her Masters of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Adaptive Education from Alverno College.
Chris Gleason, earned his BME at UW-Eau Claire in 1997 and his Masters Degree from UW-LaCrosse in 2002. He has taught band in the East Troy School District and the LaCrosse School District. He is currently a band director at Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. In 1992 Mr. Gleason was selected as the Wisconsin Governor’s Scholar to Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Mr. Gleason has performed professionally at Disneyland, Valleyfair, and the Mall of America. He continues to perform with groups such as the Top Brass Quintet, LaCrosse Symphony, and LaCrosse City Band. He is the Tuba/Euphonium Instructor for the Indianhead Arts Camp in Shell Lake, Wisconsin. He is also a member of the Wisconsin Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) Committee. He has just completed his term as Band State Chairperson for the Wisconsin Music Educators Association. Mr. Gleason is an active WSMA adjudicator and is a member of NBA, WMEA, and MENC.
Our Staff
Our staff is a family of certified and experienced music educators as well as UW-Whitewater music education majors. On average, our staff has 4-6 years of teaching experience and some have as many as 15+ years teaching music education. Regionally respected guest conductors direct the large ensembles. Everyone works energetically together to assess each camper's ability and to create an environment that will encourage, enlighten and energize the camper about music.

Q. Who are the staff/members?
A. The staff is made up of experienced licensed music educators, UW-Whitewater Faculty and music education students.
Q. How are the campers supervised?
A. Our camper to staff ratio is 10:1. We have staff assigned to teach, organize activities as well as check in and see how each camper is doing.
Q. Is UW-Whitewater a safe place to send my child?
A. UW-W prides itself on its summer camp programs. While no place is 100% safe, we are dedicated to the safety, supervision and happiness of our campers.

Housing
All resident campers live in the residence hall facilities at UW-Whitewater. Our live-in adult staff supervise camper activities. Developing new friends is encouraged.
The UW-Whitewater will hold all campers responsible for their conduct. Serious misconduct or disruption will lead to immediate dismissal from camp. Campers dismissed from the camp will not receive a refund. Roommate requests will be honored when possible; otherwise campers are paired by age and gender.
Tuition
Middle School (grades 6-8 in Fall 2009)
- $395 for resident campers
- $320* for commuting campers
A $20 per camper discount will be given to groups of eight or more from the same school attending the same week of camp.
*Commuting campers receive lunch and dinner daily.

*Each camper will be covered by a limited accident insurance policy. The insurance includes primary insurance coverage up to $1000, secondary coverage up to $5000 and $300 maximum dental insurance. Insurance does not cover pre-existing injuries and is for accidents only.
