A team-taught course designed to study the interrelationships of Art,
Music, Theatre and Dance in the Western world. The emphasis is on the
importance of the fine arts in society and their similarities and

A historical survey of popular music in America from the Revolutionary War
to the present. The ethnic music, composers and performers who contributed
to the development and changes in American music will be studied.
150-143 SURVEY OF AMERICAN JAZZ - GA - 2 cr
A listening approach to jazz with emphases both upon styles and the
contribution made by selected jazz musicians of America. Other influences
upon jazz will also be surveyed.
150-144 CULTURAL MUSIC OF THE AMERICAS - GA/Diversity - 3 cr
To explore the musical culture of native Americans, Latin Americans, and
black Americans with regard to their significance in U.S. history and
society of the present. Through music, ethnic similarities and
differences will be studied to obtain a broad and meaningful perspective
of these cultural effects.

A beginning course in music theory for interested students. The course
content includes basic concepts of notation, pitch, rhythm, scales, and

An approach to the comprehension of the basic tools of musicianship
through the study of notation, clefs, meters, scales, modes, intervals,
tonality, melody and harmony.

through the study of part-writing, harmonic progression, chord functions,
seventh chords and secondary dominants.

An approach to the comprehension of the basic tools of musicianship
through the study of pitch and pattern work on melody, harmony and

The second of a series of four semesters of basic musical training in ear
training, sightsinging and rhythm intended to be the foundation courses

A lab course, designed for instrumental teachers, which surveys various
techniques and procedures involved in the proper care and repair of wind
instruments. The course will emphasize various methods for evaluating the
mechanical efficiency of instruments and practical experience in the
repairing of instruments.

The history of jazz examines the medium through historical writings and

The history and literature of the wind band and wind ensemble will be

Designed to acquaint the student with the literature of his/her major

150-452/652 MIDI TECHNIQUES - 2 cr
MIDI Techniques is a course in which undergraduate and graduate students
will work with musical instrument digital interface sequencing
technology. Using the computer, synthesizer, digital recording, and sound
processing equipment in the UW-W MIDI Lab, the students will work with the
sequencing software Vision. This sequencing ability will then be applied
to a final project incorporating live and digital sound sources in a
combined recording.

A study of practical techniques needed by instrumental and choral
directors for arranging music for bands, choral groups, orchestra and
miscellaneous vocal and instrumental ensembles.

A study of contrapuntal technique, centering on the 18th century style.
The fugue, passicaglia, and other forms are analyzed. Students will
complete projects in two and three voices.

A study of the basic structural components as they are employed in the
traditional long forms. Analysis of selected examples extracted from
classic-period music literature.

Creative writing in various idioms, utilizing both harmonic and
contrapuntal techniques. Repeatable with cons instr.

The study and practice of jazz improvisation. Study of the fundamentals
of jazz music theory and nomenclature. Listening to, and transcribing

An in-depth study of the formats and techniques involved in arranging and
composing for the jazz small group (4 horns and rhythm section). A
complete AABA song form arrangement for jazz small group will be required,

An in-depth study of the formats and techniques involved in arranging and
composing for the large jazz ensemble (13 horns and rhythm section). A
complete AABA song form arrangement for jazz big band will be required,
performed and recorded.

150-467/667 JAZZ ENSEMBLE TECHNIQUES - 1 cr
A study of the techniques needed to direct a school jazz ensemble such as
the functions of the instruments, individually and in sections, the
various articulations necessary to perform the various styles of jazz,
and basic theoretical knowledge for understanding jazz ensemble scores and
teaching basic improvisational techniques.

A study of the techniques in producing a marching band performance
including marching fundamentals, drill design, show planning, music

Prerequisite: Completion of two semesters of Private Instruction in the
Primary Performing Area (Level 3). The student should enroll for this
course in the semester in which he/she intends to present the senior
recital. One credit of Private Instruction in the Primary Performing Area
(Level 4) may be elected concurrently. The main objective of the course is
the preparation and presentation of a recital consisting of at least
twenty minutes of music.
150-489 SENIOR RECITAL (PERFORMANCE) - 1 cr
Prerequisite: Completion of two semesters of Private Instruction in the
Primary Performing Area (Level 3). The student should enroll for this
course in the semester in which he/she intends to present the senior
recital. A minimum of 2 and a maximum of 3 credits of Private Instruction
in the Primary Performing Area (Level 4) should be elected concurrently.
The main objective of the course is the preparation and presentation of a
recital of at least 45 minutes of music.

aggregate number of credits earned in these activities will appear on the
transcript, not more than 6 credits accrued by organizational
