COLLEGE OF LETTERS & SCIENCES
CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

AGENDA

The Committee will meet Electronically THURSDAY, February 17, 2011

  1. Chemistry
    1. Prerequisite change for CHEM 370 "Physical Chemistry." (The change in corequisites reflects proposed changes in three of the chemistry majors that reduce the math requirement to go through MATH 254 instead of MATH 255 and changes in the physic requirements to either calculus based PHYSCS 180/181 or non-calculus based PHYSCS 140/141. The description change reflects the changes in the way this course will be taught and more precisely describes the topics covered).
    2. Prerequisite change for CHEM 371 "Physical Chemistry." (The change in prerequisites reflects changes in how material is being taught in this course due to changes in three of the chemistry majors math and physics requirements.  Based on suggestions from the American Chemical Society, the math and physics requirements are in the process of being changed and this will change how CHEM 370 and CHEM 371 are taught. The description change more precisely describes the topics covered).
    3. Change in major Chemistry Major (BA/BS) - Professional ACS Approved Emphasis. (Changes the math requirement from three semesters of calculus to two semesters of calculus and the physics requirement from only calculus based to either calculus or non-calculus based. The change from 59 to 61 credit units is a reflection that the calculus course included in this proposal, MATH 254, is 5 credit units and currently the major includes MATH 255which is 3 credit units.  MATH 254 is a prerequisite for MATH 255 so the math requirement changes in this proposal actually reduce the number of units required because MATH 255 is no longer required.  The apparent increase is a result of the hidden requirements currently in the major.  This proposal removes hidden requirements in prerequisite mathematics (in terms of calculus) and physics courses.)
    4. Change in major Chemistry Major (BA/BS) - Liberal Arts Emphasis. (Changes the math requirement from three semesters of calculus to two semesters of calculus and the physics requirement from only calculus based to either calculus or non-calculus based.  The request also removes hidden requirements in the math and physics requirements of the major).
    5. Change in major Chemistry Major (BSE). (This request changes the math requirement from three semesters of calculus to two semesters of calculus and the physics requirement from only calculus based to either calculus or non-calculus based.  The request also removes hidden requirements in the math and physics requirements of the major.  In addition, the list of Licensure courses was adjusted to accurately reflect the total number of credits required (to 41), remove courses no longer offered, and sequence the courses more appropriately.  The GPA requirement is changed in this proposal from 2.00 to 2.75 to match the admittance requirements for Professional Education).
  2. Mathematics and Computer Science
    1. Prerequisite change for COMPSCI 172 "Introduction to Object Oriented Programming with JAVA." (COMPSCI 172 is designed for students with some programming experience. Too many students are entering this course without a sufficient background in programming, and this has had a detrimental effect on the course. The prerequisite change will allow the instructor to limit enrollment to those students who have had the proper background).
    2. Prerequisite change for COMPSCI 174 "Introduction to C++." (COMPSCI 174 is designed for students with some programming experience. Too many students are entering this course without a sufficient background in programming, and this has had a detrimental effect on the course. The prerequisite change will allow the instructor to limit enrollment to those students who have had the proper background).
