Black Student Union hosts World AIDS Meeting Dec. 2
Released: December 1, 2008
Prevention remains a major challenge for those around the world who work to educate individuals about AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Black Student Union (BSU) will host an informative World Aids Meeting to do their part to educate and inform, 5:15 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2 in Upham Hall 145.
“The World Aids Meeting is a very important event to the students,” said Brittany Jackson, president of BSU. “This is because the AIDS epidemic is so rampant across the world. People who engage in risky sexual activity (and not always risky), don't always want to get checked. They think it’s something to be embarrassed about if you say you have had an AIDS test before, so we need to increase awareness, especially those in the black community about this epidemic.”
Increasing awareness is one of the many reasons why BSU is hosting the event. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this informative meeting to educate not only themselves but others as well.
Elements of the meeting include poetry, facts about HIV/AIDS presented by the BSU Executive Board and a motivational address by the Rev. Adrian D. Malone of Higher Dimensions Church of God in Christ.
“The World Aids Meeting allows the campus to focus on this debilitating epidemic,” said Shedrick Daniels, a member of BSU. “You can never know too much. HIV/AIDS affects everyone whether they know it or not. It is important for everyone to get ‘in the know’ about how this disease is transmitted.”
