MEMORANDUM
To: UW-Whitewater Faculty, Deans, and Department Chairs
From: Beverly Kopper, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Hephzibah Kumpaty, Chair, Faculty Senate
Subject: Reappointment/promotion/tenure procedures
Date: June 15, 2010
The following procedures will be used for reappointment/promotion/tenure for the 2010-2010 academic year. Keep in mind that faculty hired with prior years of credited service will be reviewed with those years taken into consideration. For example, if a second-year faculty member at UW-W was originally hired with two years of credited service, that faculty member will then be reviewed as a fourth-year faculty member, including review by the College Constituency Committee.1
- The UW-Whitewater Faculty Personnel Rules will be used for reappointment, promotion, and tenure reviews. They may be found at http://www.uww.edu/facsenate/rulesrev.pdf. The Rules have been revised and are being prepared for the web; thus, the pages referenced in #6 below may adjust slightly.
- Probationary faculty whose initial contracts begin in the fall of 2010 and who have been issued a two-year contract will not be formally reviewed in 2010-2011. Departments will conduct a consultation for those faculty following the first semester on campus.
- During the fall of 2010, departments will review those probationary faculty on one-year contracts or who are in the second year of a two-year contract. During the fall 2010 review, departments will decide whether or not to reappoint these probationary faculty members, and also whether to offer two-year or one-year contracts to these probationary faculty members. Both decisions must be forwarded to the dean.
- Continuing faculty in the first year of a two-year contract will undergo a consultation during the fall of 2010. Continuing faculty in their fourth year and who are in the first year of a two-year contract should consult their department chairs for information on submission of review materials to the College Constituency Committee.
- University standards (see http://www.uww.edu/acadaff/admin/personnel/promotions.html) will be used. As college and department standards are approved, they will also be used.
- The sequence of reviewers who make decisions or recommendations on the various reappointment, promotion, and/or tenure reviews, including faculty with credited years of experience, is found in the tables of the Rules, pp. 54-55. See also specifically Section C, pages 13-28 for details. See Section III, C, 4, v (p. 16) for the department’s responsibilities.
