Schedule of Consultations and Reappointment Reviews for Probationary Faculty
In accordance with the Rules Governing Faculty Appointments Under UWS 3, Wisconsin Administrative Code, as approved by the Board of Regents on October 5, 1979, and amended February 5, 1982 and April 2, 2004, the procedures as described below will be in effect for Reappointment of probationary faculty.
Faculty hired as Assistant Professors since the fall of 2004 have a two-year appointment. No decision is necessary, but a consultation is to be held following the first semester on campus to review the Document of Intent [Personnel Rules (III,C,4,e)]. The consultation on the faculty member's initial Document of Intent and the creation of a new Document of Intent will meet the requirement for the face-to-face review. The consultation follows department procedures, and is conducted by the department chair and at least one other tenured faculty member. The Personnel Rules (III, C, 4, c) specify that at least one of these two shall have observed the faculty member's teaching. The Personnel Rules further note that a summary of the consultation session shall be written and retained in the faculty member's Purple Book.
The tables below, extracted from the Personnel Rules, should be used to determine the actions taken in the review process for faculty with
0
years of credited experience, or faculty with
1, 2, and 3 years
of credited service:
Faculty in their second year (1) must be reviewed Personnel Rules (III, C, 4, f , (2), (b)) and two decisions must be forwarded to the Dean of the College Personnel Rules (III, C, 4, d), one regarding reappointment, and the second whether to award a one- or two-year contract Personnel Rules (III, C, 4, f, (2), (b)).
If faculty in their third, fourth, or fifth year have a two-year contract (2), then no action is necessary, but a consultation with the Department must take place and the written summary of the consultation shall be inserted in the Purple Book. The consultation must take place during the fall semester.
If faculty in their third, fourth, or fifth year are on a one-year contract or in the second year of a two-year contract (3) Personnel Rules (III, C, 4, f, (2), (b)), then the department must conduct a review with two decisions, one regarding reappointment, and the second whether to award a one- or two-year contract Personnel Rules (III, C, 4, f, (2), (b)).
Faculty in their sixth year (3) must be reviewed, and decision regarding Reappoint must be forwarded to the Dean of the College. Note: a decision to reappoint at the end of the maximum probationary period is a decision to recommend tenure. Personnel Rules (III, B, 10, g & i). As of May 1, 1999, promotion to the rank of Associate Professor is concomitant with the tenure decision (FS989-48). Faculty hired as associate professors without tenure will follow appropriate review schedules for reappointment, consultation, and tenure decisions. Assistant Professors tenured prior to May, 1999, may apply for promotion to associate professor when they have met the minimum university requirements for education and time in rank Personnel Rules (III, H, 1)
Faculty hired with prior years of credited service will be reviewed with those years taken into consideration. For example, a second-year faculty member at UW-W who was originally hired with two years of credited service will then be reviewed as a fourth-year faculty member, including review by the College Constituency Committee.
If a review with decision would normally not be required for the year in which the faculty member is in her/his fourth year, the faculty must undergo a review, including review by the College Constituency Committee.
For additional information on the Department performance consultation and Department performance review with decisions, see III, C, 4, c [consultation] and d [performance review with decisions] of the Personnel Rules.
1 In the fall term, the review considers the faculty member's performance completed during the previous year of a two-year contract. For example, Nobel Laureate's contract began in Fall 2010; in the Fall of 2011, s/he will have a review with decision.
2 In the fall term, the review with decision considers the faculty member's performance completed during the previous two years of a two-year contract. For example, Nobel Laureate's contract began in Fall of 2010; in the Fall of 2012, s/he will have a review with decision.
3 The department will consider the faculty member's performance from the beginning of the initial contract with UWW. For example, if Nobel Laureate's contract began in Fall 2010, with no years of credited service, then the review in fall 2016 will consider the performance of Nobel Laureate from 2010 through summer of 2016. For those faculty with credited service, this will include work done prior to coming to UWW. For additional information, see III, C, 4, e, 1, (c).
