Nominations for the W.P. Roseman Excellence in Teaching Award
The W. P. Roseman Excellence in Teaching Award is presented annually to a faculty member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in recognition of outstanding teaching. The award was established in memory of W. P. Roseman, who directed the campus elementary school from 1919 to 1942. The recipient is chosen by an all-university committee of faculty and students.
Each of the four colleges submits one nominee for the award. College nominees are chosen according to criteria established by the respective colleges.
All nominees will be honored at a reception sponsored by the Chancellor and the Provost. The recipient of the award will:
- Be introduced at the Spring commencement ceremony,
- Receive recognition at the Chancellor’s welcoming speech for the Fall semester,
- Have his/her name and photograph displayed in the Andersen Library for a year,
- Have his/her name added to a plaque displayed in Andersen Library, and
- Have a formal presentation of the award at the annual Awards/Retirement dinner in May.
Submission of Nomination Materials
A candidate’s nomination materials should consist of the following (to be submitted by March 1):
- A current curriculum vita.
- A one (1) to two (2) page statement of teaching philosophy.
- A letter of nomination from the department or college selection committee.
This letter should address how the faculty member has a love of learning and has exhibited teaching expertise.
- A maximum of three (3) letters of recommendation from students (one may be a letter from an alumnus/a).
- Two (2) letters from among the following: campus colleagues/department chairperson/dean addressing the nominee’s qualifications as an outstanding teacher.
- A summary of student evaluations for each course taught during the past three years and a copy of the course evaluation form that may clarify the evaluations.
- A list of courses taught by the nominee at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater during the past three years and two (2) different examples (maximum of one (1) page per example) that illustrate classroom activities, assignments, or pedagogy.
Examples may include, but are not limited to, an assignment description, a rubric for assessing an assignment, use of media in teaching a concept, description of a pedagogical method of teaching a concept, etc.
- A list of non-credit academic activities involving students (for example, conducting student research or seminars, advising organizations).
- Any other evidence of outstanding teaching ability (e.g., recognition from a professional organization for teaching).
- A completed Recognition Reception Nominee Information Form (completed and submitted digitally by March 1) that includes:
- Information about the nominee and the award under consideration,
- A one-paragraph narrative describing the merits of the nominee for this award (max. 200 words), and
- The name and contact information of the presenter for this nominee.
(Historically, presenters for Roseman nominees are current students.)
College selection committees should submit nine (9) copies of the nomination materials to the Associate Vice Chancellor’s Office by March 1. Materials will be returned to the candidate after the selection process is completed.
The recipient of this award is selected by a committee composed of one faculty representative and one student representative from each academic college, with an ex officio member chairing the committee.
