Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
John Stone currently serves as interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Prior to assuming this role, he served as dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education (since 2007), and as the interim associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. His interests and values as an academic leader have centered on academic program innovation, entrepreneurship, academic assessment, strategic management and student success. Outside of the institution, he continues to serve as team chair and peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission—one of the five regional accreditation associations in higher education.
He joined UW-Whitewater in 1990 as an assistant professor in the Department of Communication, teaching and researching in areas related to helping organizations communicate more effectively. In that capacity, he was named a Wisconsin Teaching Fellow, was winner of the College of Arts and Communication Excellence in Teaching Award, and was a five-time university honoree for scholarship and creative achievement. Prior to joining UW-Whitewater, Stone worked with the Management Development Center of Honeywell Aerospace, and had worked as a consultant for a number of organizations, including General Mills, Baxter Medical, Parker Pen, and the Internal Revenue Service—working to help such organizations develop their information-sharing practices and interpersonal environments.
He earned his doctorate in speech communication at the University of Minnesota with an emphasis in rhetoric and organizational communication in 1990.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Office of Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs oversees the internal affairs at the university and is charged with the development, implementation, and assessment of academic policies and programs. The Provost works with the directors of units including Academic Support Services, Information Technology, the Academic Advising and Exploration Center, Admissions, International Studies, Institutional Research, the Honors Program, the Registrar's Office, the University Library, Research and Sponsored Programs, and Undergraduate Research. As Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Provost serves as the chief academic officer of the university, its colleges and schools. The office coordinates activities of academic deans for the Colleges of Arts and Communication, Business and Economics, Education and Professional Studies, and Letters and Sciences, and the School of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education. The Provost informs and advises the Chancellor on all academic matters and plays a primary role in institutional planning and operations. In the absence of the Chancellor, the Provost serves as acting Chancellor.
