Diversity and Global Perspectives: Progress 2010-2012
Goal 2: Identify, examine, and support models for success for "students of opportunity."
At UW-Whitewater, we strive to be recognized nationally as an institution that promotes and nurtured diversity of many kinds. Our campus-wide Inclusive Excellence policy grew out of this desire, and is just one of the many ways we ensure that "students of opportunity" are fully supported in every aspect of campus life.
Strategic Initiatives Grants
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Strategic Initiatives Program funds, on a one time basis, high priority projects for which alternative sources of support do not exist. Since 2010, these grants have been used to develop a new course on African-American politics, to send undergraduates to Hyderabad, India for a summer research program, and to host a colloquium of Mexican scholars to explore the changing face of cultural identiy in Mexico and the United States, among other projects.
Generally, projects are funded for amounts between $5,000 and $50,000. Funding supplements other UW-Whitewater or UW System initiatives and/or programs. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) provides support services to assist researchers with acquiring such grants.

Serving Students with Disabilities
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has long been recognized as one of the best universities in the country serving students with disabilities. To continually meet and exceed these high expectations, The Center for Students with Disabilities hosts a wide variety of programs.
The Center for Students with Disabilities' mission is to be partners in creating an accessible learning community where our high percentage of students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of the educational experience. Services for students with disabilities are described on the CSD website.
As an example, the CSD facilitates participation of students with mobility impairments in a Science Field Experience in Yellowstone National Park.
Diversity is specifically addressed on the LEARN Center website which provides access to topics such as strategies to work with students with Asperger Syndrome, the 2008 Equity Scorecard,and strategies to promote an accepting campus climate.
