Announcements:

  • A memorandum from Dick Telfer was sent to the General Education committee which asked the committee to discuss the relationship between core courses and majors.

Bruce Eshelman moved, and Phil Johns seconded, to approve the Biology change in major proposals for Cell/Physiology (BA/BS/BSE), General (BA/BS/BSE), and Ecology/Field (BA/BS/BSE) as well as the change in submajor proposal, General Science-Broadfield Biology Emphasis (BSE). The motion carried.

There was a discussion regarding bibliographies. Concerns were raised regarding how many resources are readily available to students and the timeliness of other resources that are not. Suggestions included limiting the bibliography section to no more than two or three pages, annotating key texts, and/or listing only the resources that are readily available. The issue will be revisited at a subsequent meeting.

The committee revisited the issue of the dedicating a special course number for study abroad credits. A suggestion was made that the directive to have approval for the course credit prior to the actual taking of the course be written into the proposal so that it is not misinterpreted in the future. Also, a question was raised regarding the option to accept the credit within the Major.

At 2:54 p.m., the meeting adjourned on a John Washbush/George Ferencz motion.
