Minutes of the January 26, 2001 Meeting

PRESENT:  Scott Bradley, Tom Colwin, Glenn Hayes (for George Ferencz),  Anne Hamilton, John Howat, Tony Gulig (for Phil Johns), Larry Kenney, Marilyn Lavin, Larry Schuetz, Debra Schufletowski, Stephen Solheim, Jim Stewart, Alvaro Taveira, Richard Telfer, Sally Vogl-Bauer, and John Washbush

Richard Telfer called the meeting to order at 2:17 p.m.

Tom Colwin moved approval of the January 26, 2001 agenda.   Marilyn Lavin seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Tom Colwin moved, and Marilyn Lavin seconded, to approve the November 17, 2000 minutes. The motion carried.

Dick Telfer announced that the student records portion of our new administrative software would be going live this spring.  During this implementation period there is likely to be a delay in processing some curricular changes.  Some changes will also require some additional lead time (e.g., the departmental name change on the agenda, if approved, will not be in the timetable until Spring 2002).  He also explained the consultation process, and how it pertains to the UCC.

The College of Business and Economics' course proposals for a change in degree BBA [Regarding the Computer End-User Technologies] and for a change in the General Business (BBA) Major were approved on Marilyn Lavin/Tom Colwin motions.

Stephen Solheim moved approval of the Biological Sciences Department's proposal for a new emphasis Marine Biology and Freshwater Ecology.  Phil Johns seconded the motion.  Dick Telfer then raised issues regarding the course and its travel to Deakin University during the student's final year and the uniqueness of the Deakin courses.  Phil Johns moved to amend the motion to include exceptions to the university's "last 15 credit" rule as well as the "15 credit maximum" for study abroad credit. Stephen Solheim seconded, and the motion as amended carried.

 

Sally Vogl-Bauer moved, and Glen Hayes seconded, to approve the Communication Department's proposals for a new emphasis International Journalism, 3/1 Program with Deakin University.  The motion carried.

Phil Johns moved to approve the History Department's proposals for changes in the following majors and submajors:
History (BA/BS), History (BSE), Social Studies-Broadfield History I Emphasis (BSE), Social Studies History II Emphasis (BSE), History Minor, History Minor Elementary Education Emphasis, and History Minor Secondary Education Emphasis
See proposal  Tom Colwin seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

 
Phil Johns moved to receive and record the Mathematical and Computer Sciences Department's proposal 760-140 Mathematical Ideas for a change in requisites. Sally Vogl-Bauer seconded the motion, which carried.  Phil Johns moved, and Marilyn Lavin seconded, to approve adding general education credit to 760-230 Introductory Statistics.  The motion carried.  Phil Johns then moved to approve the following package:  course revision 765-171 Introduction to Programming; new courses 765-172 Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming in Java, 765-173 Introduction to Fortran Programming, 765-281 HTML and Web Page Design, 765-282 Media on the Web, 765-381 JavaScript and DHTML, 765-382 Perl and CGI Scripting, 765-481 Web Server and Unix Administration, and 765-482 Web Database Development; and two new submajors Website Design and Administration Minor and Website Design and Administration Certificate.  Ann Hamilton seconded the motion. After some discussion, Stephen Solheim moved to divide the question by removing two of the courses  765-281 HTML and Web Page Design and  765-282 Media on the Web and the two new submajors Website Design and Administration Minor and Website Design and Administration Certificate  from the main motion and to postpone action on the two courses and the submajors until the February 23rd meeting to allow for additional consultation. Phil Johns seconded the motion which carried.  The main motion, to approve the remaining courses carried.  The parties agreed that the consultation will take place in time for the proposals to be considered at the February 23rd meeting.

The Political Science and Sociology Departments' proposal for a change in contact hours and credit for 617/880-280 Introduction to Australian Studies: Australian Society & Culture was received and recorded on a Phil Johns/Marilyn Lavin motion.

The Safety Studies Department's proposal for a change in department name from:  Safety Studies  to: Occupational and Environmental Safety & Health was approved on a Alvaro Taveira/Scott Bradley motion.  It was noted that the name change will not be reflected in the timetable until Spring 2002, and may be modified slightly to remove the double "and".

The Special Education Department's new course proposal 480-201 Disability in Society was approved on a Larry Kenney/Alvaro Taveira motion.
 

John Washbush moved approval of the Sociology Department's proposal for a new minor Family and Health Studies.  Glenn Hayes seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

The Theatre Department's proposal for a change in the Arts Management Minor was approved on a Tom Colwin/Sally Vogl-Bauer motion.

Tom Colwin moved to receive and record the special courses approved between November 9, 2000 and January 19, 2001 which are as follows:

John Washbush seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

A proposal for improved Procedures for Curriculum Proposal Form #1 was reviewed and accepted by the committee on a John Washbush/Tom Colwin motion.

Dick Telfer discussed an issue regarding contact hours for special courses that are web based.  A subcommittee comprised of John Washbush, Tom Colwin, Sally Vogl-Bauer, Jim Stewart, and Dick Telfer will meet prior to March 20th.
 

The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 p.m.
