Minutes of the September 8, 2000 Meeting

PRESENT:   Scott Bradley, Tom Colwin, George Ferencz, Anne Hamilton, John Howat, Phil Johns, Marilyn Lavin, Ann Ruff (for Larry Kenney), Stephen Solheim, Jim Stewart, Alvaro Taveira, Richard Telfer, Sally Vogl-Bauer, and John Washbush

ABSENT:    Larry Schuetz

GUEST:       Jo Ann Oravec and Tony Truog

Dick Telfer called the meeting to order at 2:20 p.m.  He started the meeting with introductions and a summary of the committee’s history and charge.

George Ferencz moved approval of the September 8, 2000 agenda with a change to item #8; the second music course listed as 150-240 was changed to 150-241.  John Washbush seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

The April 14, 2000 minutes were approved on a Marilyn Lavin/Phil Johns motion.

The Biological Sciences Department’s proposal for changes in number and requisites for Plant Physiology (from 630-417 to 630-317) was received and recorded on a Phil Johns/John Howat motion.

Because of a consultation request from the Mathematical and Computer Sciences Department, the proposals from the Business Education and Office Systems Department were postponed for two weeks on a Marilyn Lavin/Phil John motion.  It was also suggested that more information be provided in the “Budgetary Impact” line of these proposals.  It was further suggested that proposals from all academic units should address the budgetary impact (e.g., teaching the new course once a year will mean another course will be taught less often).

Alvaro Taveira moved to approve the proposal from the Educational Foundations Department to add General Education credit to course 420-243 Education in a Pluralistic Society.  John Washbush seconded the motion, and after some discussion, the motion was approved.

The Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Coaching Department’s proposals to delete courses 448-468  ASEP/NFICEP Sport First Aid and 448-469  ASEP/NFICEP Coaching Principles; for a new course 448-100 WIAA Coaching Certification: Principles /Sport First Aid; and for a change in the Coaching Minor were received and recorded or approved as appropriate as a package on a John Washbush/Scott Bradley motion.

George Ferencz then moved to approve the Music Department’s new course proposals 150-240 Survey of African American Music and 150-241 Survey of Latin American Music.  Sally Vogl-Bauer seconded the motion which carried.

John Washbush moved to receive and record the special courses approved between April 7, 2000 and September 1, 2000 which are as follows:

John Howat seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Phil Johns moved, and Tom Colwin seconded, to accept the General Education Committee’s report and to approve courses 900-130  Individual and Society and 900-140  Global Perspectives for another two years.  The motion carried.

Dick Telfer then addressed last year’s concerns regarding the information provided for the committee regarding core course reviews.  It was decided to request a more thorough report from the General Education Committee and to make a copy of the self-study (less the addendums) available for review.  Dick Telfer will address the issue with the chair of the General Education Committee.

Jim Stewart then addressed the committee regarding the application of PeopleSoft and possible effects on curriculum matters and APRs.  Student Records will be going live in February 2001 for Fall 2001.  The courses will have alpha prefixes rather than numeric prefixes, and there may be a period of time when APRs may not be updated in the old system (during the conversion to the new system).  Jim also stated that we plan to begin personalizing PeopleSoft APRs after February.  One member brought up the need for more communication and training to take place with faculty regarding the upcoming changes.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:10 p.m. on a John Washbush/John Howat motion.
