Minutes of the February 21, 2003 Meeting




PRESENT:  Kati Altscheager (new WSG rep), Scott Bradley, Tom Colwin, Dan Edlebeck, Anthony Gulig, Phil Johns, Anne Hamilton, Linda Holmes, Mary Margaret Hosler, John Howat, Larry Kenney, Barbara Monfils, Ann Ruff, Larry Schuetz, Alvaro Taveira, and Wilfred Tremblay

ABSENT:    George Ferencz, Tanyi Fuoching, and Carmen Pereira

Barbara Monfils called the meeting to order at 2:15 p.m.

Larry Kenny moved, and Alvaro Taveira seconded, approval of the February 21, 2003 agenda.  The motion carried.

Mary Margaret Hosler moved, and Alvaro Taveira seconded, approval of the university-wide proposal for a change in title for University Requirement Category.   Larry Schuetz, the sponsor of the proposal, stated that the HPERC Department suggested that the the new title be Wellness and Physical Activity.  Tony Gulig motioned that the proposal go from Personal Health and Fitness to Wellness and Physical Activity as a friendly amendment.  Tom Colwin seconded the motion, and the motion as amended carried.

The proposal from the College of Business and Economics  for a new course BEINDP 493 International Business Internship was approved on a Mary Margaret Hosler/John Howat motion.

The proposals from the Colleges of Business and Economics and of Letters and Sciences for a new prefix Integrated Sciences -Business "SCIBUS" and a change in major Integrated Science-Business (BBA) were approved on a Phil Johns/Mary Margaret Hosler motion.

Larry Kenney moved to receive and record the proposals from the Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Coaching Department  for changes in grade basis for PEFIELD 411 Directed Teaching Physical Education- Elementary School, PEFIELD 412 Directed Teaching Physical Education- Middle School and PEFIELD 414 Directed Teaching Physical Education-Secondary.  Alvaro Taveira seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Tony Gulig moved, and Anne Hamilton seconded, approval of the History Department's proposals for changes in the History (BA/BS) major, the History Minor, and the History Minor with Public History Emphasis.  The motion carried.

Phil Johns moved, and Tom Colwin seconded, approval of the proposal from the Languages and Literatures Department for a new course Freshman English Honors.   Roxanne DePaul, Director of the University Honors Program, stated that she was concerned with the ACT English subscore of at least 18, and felt that 24 was more appropriate.  The sponsor of the proposal agreed to the change.  Anne Hamilton moved to amend, and Phil Johns seconded. The motion to amend carried.  Roxanne then asked that "or consent of the University Honor's Program Director" also be added.  Anne Hamilton moved to amend the proposal accordingly.  Alvaro Taveira seconded the motion, and the motion carried.  The proposal as amended carried.

Mary Margaret Hosler moved, and John Howat seconded, approval of the proposal from the Marketing Department to limit enrollment for the Professional Minor in Business Studies: Marketing Emphasis. The motion carried.

The proposals from the Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health Department for a change in number and title and to add General Education (GI) credit to SFTYGEN 201 Personal and Public Safety, a change in the Occupational Safety (BS) Major, and a change in the  Occupational Safety Minor were all approved on a Alvaro Taveira/Larry Kenney motion.

Larry Kenney moved, and Tom Colwin seconded, approval of the Special Education Department's proposals for the new courses SPECED 407 (607) Foundations of Autism Spectrum Disorders, SPECED 408 (608) Methods for Teaching Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and SPECED 409 (609) Nonviolent Crisis Intervention.  The motion carried.
 

Tom Colwin moved to receive and record the special courses approved between December 15, 2002 and February 12, 2003 as follows:

Anne Hamilton seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Barb Monfils brought to the committee's attention that the Office of International Education and Programs has stated that there are problems with field studies being offered with a travel abroad component.  The committee discussed the issue, and it was suggested that the Office of International Education and Programs meet with Vay Rodman of Risk Safety, and that recommendations be made at that time.  The issue will be sent back to the committee at that time.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:37 p.m. on a Wilfred Tremblay/Tony Gulig  motion.
