About the Programs

Students in the counselor education program will connect theory with practice to become effective professional counselors in a variety of educational and community settings.

The department offers a 48-credit master's degree in counseling, which provides graduate level training in school counseling, higher education or community counseling. The program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. It meets the curriculum requirements for the National Board of Counselor Certification and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction's school counselor licensure. It also meets the state's requirements for licensure as a professional counselor, marriage and family therapist and substance abuse counselor.

Individuals who already hold master's degrees in counseling and seek additional certification can also earn certificates in community, higher education, school and addictions.

Students in the counselor education program will experience academic and experiential learning as well as learning about self. The department views teaching as a collaborative process between instructor and student that results in a student's acquisition of knowledge, development of self and growing an identity as a professional counselor.

Experiential learning is a cornerstone of the program and students will have plenty of opportunity to put theory to practice. Students can participate in a supervised field internship. They can also practice their skills on-campus in the Winther Counseling Lab and off-campus through the Counseling Lab Annex. Students will work under the supervision of faculty members, who are also certified counselors. These services are free to UW-Whitewater students, faculty and staff members and the general public.

Counselor education students are also encouraged to join the Graduate Student Counseling Association, a professional student organization, or Chi Sigma Iota, an international honor society for counselors-in-training, counselor educators and professional counselors.

Graduates of the program go on to careers in public or private schools, community mental health centers, in-patient facilities, family service agencies, correctional institutions, college counselors or career counselors.
