About the Programs
The Educational Foundations Department provides students with the groundwork of teacher education, including: philosophy and history of education, human development, educational psychology, assessment of student learning, classroom management, information literacy and technology, and an introduction to diversity.
All students who wish to be admitted to the professional education program must complete a nine-credit educational foundations block. This helps teacher candidates better understand student learning and development in a pluralistic society.
The department also offers licensure in school and public libraries through two minors, a graduate degree and licensure-only programs. A state-of-the-art laboratory dedicated to the library media and information technology curriculum is available to students. Coursework and licensure in gifted and talented education is also offered.
Faculty members have a wide range of knowledge. Students benefit from expertise in educational philosophy and history, motivation, classroom management, measurement and evaluation, gifted and talented education, urban education and library and information technology.
Students who complete the Foundations of Education block go on to careers as teachers. The block experience also contributes to careers in counseling or communication disorders. Graduates of the library and information technology program go on to work in schools or public libraries.
