About the Programs
Students interested in a career in the performing arts will have the opportunity to study alongside working professionals in the one of the finest and most functional arts centers in the Midwest.
The Theatre/Dance Department is housed in the Greenhill Center of the Arts and its facilities include the 410-seat Barnett Theatre, the Hicklin Studio Theatre, the Kachel Center dance studio as well as other shops, laboratories and classrooms.
The department's learn-by-doing approach gives students the opportunity to experiment with performance, design, direction, choreography, technical theater and stage management. Students can participate in four mainstage productions, a mainstage dance concert and a touring children's production. During the summer, students can get involved in the three-play Summeround season. A variety of other production projects are also available to students throughout the year.
Students will gain valuable stage experience through campus organizations including University Players, Theta Alpha Phi national theater honor society and the UW-Whitewater Dance Company. Students also regularly attend the American College Theatre Festival and the American College Dance Festival.
The department is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre and offers degrees in theater, performance, design and technology, stage management, management and promotion and theater education.
Graduates with a degree in theater and dance go on to careers as professional actors, dancers, designers, choreographers, technicians or managers in regional professional companies. Recent graduates have worked for the American Players Theatre, the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. Others work in theater or arts administration or teach in secondary education.
