Career Opportunities

UW-Whitewater graduates have a long tradition of success within the music field.

Music education majors have enjoyed virtually 100 percent placement in the teaching profession. Graduates are extensively prepared and certified to teach instrumental, choral or general music in the public schools. Performance majors are provided the intensive study along with solo, choir and large ensemble experiences needed for future performance careers and admission into graduate study. The theory/history degree prepares students who are interested in college teaching, research, music publishing, library work or composition. Through the bachelor of arts degree with a required minor, students can pursue career paths including arts management, music theatre and audio engineering.

Faculty

Music Department faculty members hold teaching as their main priority, but they are also very active performers and researchers. Each music student studies privately with a highly skilled active performer in his/her area, who is a role model, mentor and advisor. No classes are taught by teaching assistants. The Music Department has won an enviable number of teaching awards, including six W.P. Roseman Awards, the highest university-wide teaching award and four awards for outstanding teaching by academic staff. Outstanding research includes published articles, books, compositions and recordings.

High School Preparation

Students who plan to major in music should begin their musical studies before they enter the Music Department. Students may prepare themselves by studying piano, voice or an instrument through private lessons or by participating in band, orchestra or choir in high school. A student must pass a performance audition before being accepted into the Music Department.

Honors and Awards

UW-Whitewater music students have received numerous awards at the university, state and national level. Seven music education students have received the prestigious Richard G. Gaarder Award from the Wisconsin Music Educators Association. Students have also received top honors and recognition for vocal and instrumental performances and for composition and research projects.
