Mission

The mission of the Labor Management Council is to facilitate open, two-way communication independent of the formal organizational hierarchical structure.

Vision

Recognizing that the University's success is dependent on both the individual and collective success of its employees, the Labor Management Council will:
  • Anticipate, identify and resolve human resource work place issues

  • Recognize and respect the different perspectives of labor and management

  • Foster cooperation, seek clarification and promote consistency

  • Meet, discuss and formulate agreements that provide guidance and/or resolve human resource work place issues

  • Promote and foster development of training programs that address identified needs of the workforce

  • Facilitate resolution of conflicts between labor and management staff and/or practices that cannot be resolved in the work unit

  • Assume responsibility for gathering and disseminating accurate and timely information through its individual members, as labor and as management to its respective constituents, and as a Council.

Goals/Action Steps

  • The Council and its members shall reinforce the principle that workplace issues are first and foremost resolved between the parties in the work unit.
    Action: Guide and redirect resolution efforts into the work unit, to Best Practices or other appropriate work team before elevating to the Council for consideration. (On-going)
  • The Council shall meet on a regularly scheduled basis.
    Action: Meeting dates will be determined and communicated well in advance. (On-going, established annually)
  • To ensure effective resolution of issues an agenda will be established.
    Action: The agenda will be distributed well in advance of Council meeting(s) and only those agenda items will be discussed at the meeting. (On-going)
  • The membership of the Council shall identify developing and/or unresolved human resource issues.
    Action: Arrange to have those issues placed on the next Council meeting agenda. Participate in volunteer work team(s) and provide supporting documentation and materials regarding the issue(s) to members prior to meeting. (On-going)
  • The Office of Human Resources and Diversity shall develop a web page and maintain on a monthly basis.
    Action: The web page will contain Council-developed and approved agreements, links to other related web sites containing pertinent information and links to Council meeting minutes and agendas. (Development complete/on-going)
  • The Council shall identify data that is pertinent to the Council's Mission/Vision.
    Action: Council members will collect and analyze data and information; i.e. surveys, exit interviews. (On-going, as identified)
  • The Council will identify specific training issues and needs.
    Action: Council members will develop appropriate training strategies. (On-going, as identified)
  • The Council shall develop written local agreements as appropriate; i.e. flextime, vacation, uniform/work clothing.
    Action: Council members will identify items/issues for consideration/discussion, arrange meeting times and take appropriate action(s). (On-going, as identified)
