A note from Project Coordinator Richard James

Thanks to the sunshine, the rain, the vision of some and the hard work of many, we are well on our way to meeting our objective for the Whitewater Prairie Reconstruction Project which is to reconstruct a 50-acre prairie on a former prairie site with plantings for five unique prairie types.

Like a fine wine, prairies take time to mature. Our initial five-year goal was to raise funds through donations and grants to purchase prairie seed. Once the initial 10 acres are established, we will gather their seeds to continue planting the remaining 40 acres.

This prairie reconstruction is under the guidance of the Prairie Reconstruction Advisory Committee that includes a mix of prairie experts and prairie enthusiasts who see the value of this undertaking. Besides becoming a haven for authentic prairie plants, the UW-Whitewater Nature Preserve Prairie will serve as an education center for those wanting to learn more about prairie ecology through study and just plain enjoyment.

Prairies are pleasing to the senses. Enjoy!
