Academic Staff Assembly Approved Minutes

September 6, 2006

2006-2007 Assembly

Present:  Deb Bowen, , Mike Cohen (Chair), Michael Flanagan, Gail Fox, Amy Margulies, Eric Roche, Sandi Scott-Duex (Vice), Wayne Youngquist

 

Absent:  Nancy Farmer, Denise Ehlen (excused),  Paula Mohan (excused)

 

1.                   The meeting was brought to order by Chair Mike Cohen at 12:08 p.m.  The new Program Assistant, Patti Mirsky, was introduced.  All members, old and new, introduced themselves.

 

2.                   Minutes from May 3, 2006 (2005-2006 assembly) and May 3, 2006 (2006-2007 assembly) were approved unanimously on a Youngqust/Margulies motion.

 

3.                   Two positions with the Assembly, that of Richard Schraufnagel and that of Debbie Thompson, are both vacant.  A discussion ensued on what to do with the vacancies.  Deborah Bowen had results from the last election, and reported that Pat Moran and George Clokey both received votes.  It was noted that Pat Moran is now Tenured.  Mike Cohen will contact George Clokey to see if he is interested in filling one of the positions.  The Assembly will open the floor next meeting for instructional staff.  Mike Cohen will obtain a copy of the Academic Staff Personnel from ICIT or from Tara Boyette in HR.

 

4.                   Policy Changes:  A discussion on the new policy change regarding sick leave ensued.  Five consecutive work days on the time slip now requires verification, such as a doctor’s note or receipt.

 

5.                   Discussion ensued on the WI Administrative Code, Chapter UWS 11.  Cohen will get information from emails received from Bob Jokisch regarding this and report next time.

 

6.                   Conference Update:  Cohen attended the Leadership Conference in Eau Claire July 13 & 14..  He gave an overview on his experience and described sessions he attended.  It was a good conference with a lot of useful information.  Next year it will be held at Superior.  Next meeting we will ask if there is anyone who would like to present a topic, let Mike know.

 

7.                   Academic Staff  Committee and Liaisons

 

            a.         Academic Staff Awards Committee/ - No Report

            b.         Academic Staff Economic Issues Committee/Cohen – No Report

            c.         Academic Staff Elections & Balloting/Bowen- Will open floor next meeting for two new members.

            d.         Academic Staff Government/Cohen – No Report

            e.         Academic Staff Organization/Duex – No report

            f.          Academic Staff Professional Development/Ehlen – No Report                              

g.         Academic Staff Instructional Promotions/Farmer- No report.  

            h.         Academic Staff Review/Cohen – No Report

            i.          Academic Staff Title Appeals/Duex – Will go over committees and name liaisons in two weeks.

            j.          Academic Staff Titling Committee/Cohen – Susan stayed on.

k.                   Academic Staff Rewards and Recognition Committee/Flanagan – Mike Flanigan will email Patti regarding changes for awards

 

7.   Announcements:

       

Duex reported that John Reid, Chief of Police, recently left the University for Career Advancement and relocated to California.  He was the representative for the Athletic Committee, which is now vacant.

 

A move to name Jeff Janz to the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee was passed unanimously on a Duex/Bowen motion.

 

Duex reported that the Sexual Assault Committee needs a committee member, they meet Mondays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Margulies is already on committee, in another capacity.  No one present is has the available schedule to participate at this time.  Duex will look for someone.

 

We will be updating the brochure after we have new members confirmed.

 

Cohen reported that Purple Book training will be given on September 7, 2006 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. in the Conference room in Ambrose.

 

Duex reported about an article by Steve Naas.

 

Youngquist reported that Senator Kohl will be speaking at his class, date and time to be announced.

 

Margulies reported that the Chancellor and her staff have approved the alcohol violation sanctions.  Now the typical fourth violation will result in removal from campus.  Discussion on definition of “local violations” ensued, apparently it means on campus or off campus, locally, including City of Whitewater.

 

Flanagan reported that the Crossman Gallery show is opening September 7, 2006 with Latino Art, and will run through October 14, 2006.

 

Bowen reported that their department is looking for new recruits in their field.

 

Margulies and Duex will be absent from next meeting.

 

Bowen will be absent from October 18 meeting for SA.
