Note: The meeting of 02-13-08 was held in place of the 02-06-08 meeting, which was postponed due to extreme weather conditions.

Present: George Clokey, Mike Cohen (Chair), Denise Ehlen (Vice), Nancy Farmer, Giuliana Miolo, Paula Mohan, Kim Simes, Wayne Youngquist, Rebecca Pechous (Secretary)
Excused/Absent: Deborah Bowen, Gail Fox, Amy Margulies, Eric Roche

The meeting was brought to order by Michael Cohen at 12:04 p.m.

1. Approval of Minutes:

Minutes of the January 23, 2008, meeting were reviewed and approved unanimously as modified on an Ehlen/Miolo motion.

2. Search & Screen Update:

The campus and community online questionnaire was emailed out on January 30, requesting feedback regarding qualities employees and residents would like to see in a new Chancellor. There has been a significant amount of feedback. Presently, there are 12 candidates. The Committee plans to select five finalists for campus interviews in April with the final “Chancellor” selection to be announced in May.

3. UW System Administration Liaison to Academic Staff Meeting Planned:

Ron Singer and three other UW-System Administration staff members will meet with the Academic Staff Assembly and the Faculty Senate in the new University Center, room 259 at 2:15 on February 22.

4. Shared Governance Principles and Guidelines Document:

Assembly members stressed the need for fair, official, consistent, representation; free dissemination of information; better communication; and quick feedback between the Campuses and System Administration. The Assembly unanimously approved a Youngquist/Clokey motion to endorse the document in principle and spirit, (codicil) contingent upon reviewing the final draft. Mike Cohen will pass this decision along to the Academic Staff Representative Committee during the meeting in Madison tomorrow, February 14. Cohen announced that he will contact Joe Hogan (Chair) and request the opinion of the Faculty Senate regarding the document.

5. Academic Staff Committees and Liaisons:

  1. Academic Staff Awards Committee: Miolo – Committee has not met. A meeting is being scheduled.
  2. Academic Staff Economic Issues Committee: Cohen – No report.
  3. Academic Staff Elections/Balloting: Bowen – No report.
  4. Academic Staff Government: Mohan - No report.
  5. Academic Staff Organization: Ehlen - No report.
  6. Academic Staff Professional Development: Ehlen - We have received three applications for the February 1 deadline date. The committee meets on February 19 to review the applications.
  7. Academic Staff Instructional Promotions: Ehlen – We have a meeting today at 2:15 p.m. We have six applications to review and will complete scoring and recommendations today.
  8. Academic Staff Review: Cohen - No requests.
  9. Academic Staff Title Appeals: Margulies - No report.
  10. Academic Staff Titling Committee: Youngquist – No report. No meetings.
  11. Academic Staff Rewards and Recognition Committee: Flanagan – There were peer reviews of grant applications. Awards have been approved by the Interim Chancellor and distributed. Ehlen reported that she and Mike Flanagan will meet with Randy Marnocha, Vice Chancellor of Administrative Affairs, to discuss the reinstatement of the Rewards and Recognition Program and award funding.

Announcements:

There will be an Academic Staff summer System conference at UW-Platteville, July 17 - 18. They are accepting presentation proposals until February 15, 2008.

There is a System-wide meeting in Madison tomorrow (2-14-08) to discuss pay plan and the growth agenda.

Mike Cohen has invited John Enslin, President of the UW-Whitewater Foundation, to the meeting on March 5.
