Academic Staff Assembly Approved Minutes

The meeting was brought to order by Michael Cohen at 12:05 p.m.

1. Approval of Minutes:

Minutes of the February 13, 2008, meeting were reviewed and approved unanimously as modified on a Simes/Roche motion.

2. Questions and topics for meeting with System Administration Staff:

There will be a joint meeting of the Faculty Senate and Academic Staff Assembly with Ron Singer (of UW-System Administration), Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Lisa Kornetsky, Director of OPID, and Bob Jokisch, Special Assistant to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, at 2:15, Friday, February 22, in University Center 259. Assembly members are asked to participate if their schedules allow. There will be time for questions.

Main items to be discussed are:

• New shared governance principles and guidelines
• OPID initiatives
• Advantage Wisconsin
• System initiatives
• Reporting of leave time for instructional and non-instructional staff
• Updates on:
  • * Collective Bargaining * Budget reductions * Partner benefits * Hayes-Hill titling

3. Academic Staff Committees and Liaisons:

1. Academic Staff Awards Committee: Award nominations, due on 2-14-08, have been given to Therese Kennedy. Awards deadline timeline available by opening the following hyperlink: http://acadaff.uww.edu/awards/.
2. Academic Staff Economic Issues Committee: Cohen – a meeting will be scheduled. There will be an update on pay plan.
3. Academic Staff Elections/Balloting: Bowen – No report
4. Academic Staff Government: Mohan - No report
5. Academic Staff Organization: Ehlen - No report
6. Academic Staff Professional Development: Ehlen - The Committee completed the review of the applications yesterday. The Professional Development Committee recommended two proposals from the January 2008 applications totaling $4,356. This recommendation was ratified (for full funding of $4,356) by the Academic Staff Assembly on a Mohan/Bowen motion. Ehlen abstained.
7. Academic Staff Instructional Promotions: Ehlen – The Committee met and reviewed 6 promotion applications. The Academic Staff Assembly unanimously approved the Instructional Academic Staff Promotions Committee recommendations on a Bowen/Margulies motion. Ehlen abstained. The Instructional Academic Staff Promotions Committee also recommended the following consistent timeline (to increase awareness) for submission of promotions applications (effective immediately) for ratification.
   1. Due to Chair: Last Wednesday in November
   2. Due to Dean: First Wednesday in December
   3. Due to Academic Staff Assembly Office: Second Wednesday in December
   4. The Assembly approved the timeline recommendation on an Ehlen/Miolo motion. Ehlen abstained.
8. Academic Staff Review: Cohen - No requests
9. Academic Staff Title Appeals: Margulies - No requests
10. Academic Staff Titling Committee: Youngquist – No report
11. Academic Staff Rewards and Recognition Committee: Ehlen – She and Mike Flanagan met with Randy Marnocha, Vice Chancellor of Administrative Affairs, to discuss the reinstatement of the Rewards and Recognition Program. Marnocha was presented with updated guidelines. The program is still pending.

Announcements:

In the summer of 2009, UW-Whitewater is considering hosting the annual System Academic Staff Leadership Conference. An exploratory committee is being sought in order to schedule and plan the event. Sub-committees will also be formed.

John Enslin, President of the UW-Whitewater Foundation, has been invited to the meeting on 3-19.

Future Agenda Items

Titling Process will be discussed on March 5.
