Franklin Bushman
Dr. Franklin Bushman joined the UW-Whitewater faculty in September 1947 as director of the instrumental program. In 1950 he became head of the music program, and was first chair of the newly created Music Department until 1972.
Under his leadership, the faculty grew to 22 members and majors in music education were developed. One of his greatest achievements was his ability to attract outstanding music educators to the faculty.
Dr. Bushman directed the university marching band for a number for years, which achieved statewide recognition for its performances. He also worked with the southeastern district high school band and choral festivals.
Receiving degrees from Bowling Green State University and Columbia University in New York, Dr. Bushman taught in New York, Michigan and Illinois before coming to Whitewater. He was a member of National Education Association, Wisconsin Educational Association, Phi Mu Alpha and Phi Beta Mu fraternities.
The Franklin Bushman Memorial Scholarship is to support a junior or senior music major that shows great promise in Music Theory, and potential for success in music.
