Henry and Violet DeWind
(Henry 1919 - 2004)

Dr. Henry and Violet DeWind came to Whitewater in 1952, when Henry joined Whitewater State Teacher’s College in 1952.  He taught history for 31 years, with a special emphasis in Renaissance and Reformation History, and was recognized as a scholar and strong teacher with a commitment to a high quality education for his students.

As a veteran of WWII, Henry served 4 years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in New Guinea.  While working toward his PhD at the University of Chicago in 1951, he met his wife Violet and they were married in 1952.  Violet received a Masters degree in Social Studies from the University of Chicago, and has worked for 23 years with the public library in Whitewater.

The DeWinds raised four children in Whitewater, growing strong ties to the community.  After his retirement in 1983, Henry and Violet continued their deep commitment to the University and Whitewater through personal involvement and contributions to projects that improved the quality of education and life in the community.

The Henry and Violet DeWind Scholarship is given to a freshman attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater who is majoring in a program offered by the Art department.
