Sam Martino
Sam Martino, a lecturer with the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater Communication Department, established the Martino Journalism Scholarship in 2008 to benefit students with a declared journalism major. Along with teaching, Martino serves as advisor for the campus newspaper, the Royal Purple, and the Society of Professional Journalists, and as coordinator for print and broadcast interns.
Martino obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State University and completed an American Political Science Fellowship/Congressional Fellowship. Through his many years working as a reporter and editor, Martino was recommended for a Pulitzer Prize, received the Wisconsin Newsman of the Year and numerous spot news and court awards from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association and Society of Professional Journalists. He has worked as a reporter and correspondent for Associated Press, Lansing State Journal, the Minneapolis Tribune, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, United Press International and the Dearborn Guide.
Martino believes in “using the classroom and other venues to advance the learning process of students and to promote shoe leather experience.” The Martino Journalism Scholarship is designed to fulfill this belief by providing financial assistance to a junior or senior student with a major in journalism.
