This scholarship endowment was established in 2005 by friends and alumni in honor of Carlene McMonagle, distinguished voice instructor at UW-Whitewater from 1980 to 2005. The award was made possible largely though the support of Joyce Vande Bunt of Whitewater, friend of the arts, and a strong supporter of voice scholarships in the McMonagle studio for many years.
Carlene continually demonstrated her commitment to students at UW–Whitewater by upholding standards of musical excellence in the voice studio and in the classroom. An exceptionally large number of her students received awards in competitions that included the regional Metropolitan Opera auditions and the Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, in which more than 75 students from her studio took awards as first, second, or finalist.
Carlene also served as Coordinator of the Voice area and was exceptionally effective in recruiting strong voice students to the campus. She was recognized for her teaching excellence with the Academic Staff Excellence in Teaching Award (1996), a Golden Key Honorary Award as well as the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Milwaukee Civic Music Association excellence in Studio Teaching Award (2002).
