Raymond E. and Zenobia Light
(Raymond 1917-1994, Zenobia 1924-2001)
Dean Emeritus Raymond Light joined the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater faculty in 1954 as a professor of music and director of choral music. He served in these capacities until 1970, when he became the first dean of the newly independent College of the Arts. As a professor, Dr. Light greatly improved the vocal music and choral program at UW-Whitewater, and led his choirs to national acclaim as they performed across America. He was the recipient of the Johnson Foundation of Racine award for excellence in teaching in 1967, and in 1968 was presented with the prestigious W.P. Roseman Award for Teaching Excellence.
Dr. Light was one of the leading figures in advocating the construction of the Center of the Arts to house the newly formed College of the Arts. As dean, Light helped the college grow and upgrade its programs to eventually include majors in art, music and theatre. Light’s term as dean also ushered in a period of outstanding Cultural Affairs and Crossman Gallery programs that enhanced the cultural climate of the entire university. Dr. Light retired from UW-Whitewater in 1982.
Zenobia R. Light was a grade-school music teacher who instilled her love of music in many of her pupils. Former students say that the time spent in her classroom was quite magical.
The Raymond E. and Zenobia R.Light Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1997 by family and friends. The fund provides scholarships each year to outstanding Art, Music or Theatre/Dance majors.
