Once a sports reporter for the Royal Purple at UW-Whitewater, Gary D’Amato’78 has gone from covering Division III athletics to traveling around the world covering the Olympics, Super Bowls, PGA Championships and the Indianapolis 500 for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
D’Amato recently traveled to Turin, Italy, to cover his fifth Olympic Games but his ambitions have gone beyond covering major sports events for a newspaper. “One of my career goals was to get a book published,” he said, and he’s done it — four times.
His books include “The Packer Tapes: My 32 Years With the Green Bay Packers,” “Stadium Stories: Green Bay Packers,” “The Proof is in the Putting,” and “Mudbaths and Bloodbaths: The Inside Story of the Bears-Packers Rivalry,” which is in its second printing.
“I’ve learned a great deal about book publishing over the last 12 years and I hope I’m not done writing books,” D’Amato said. “The problem is finding time.” A signing of “Mudbaths and Bloodbaths” is tentatively scheduled for the UW-Whitewater 2006 Homecoming game on Oct. 14., and 25 percent of the proceeds will go to the College of Arts and Communication.
