Just anotherTerra Nova?
Not for Cassandra Schillo, a UW- Whitewater student with a major in Stage Management and a minor in music. Cassandra won the Kennedy Center Region III American College Theatre Festival Award for Excellence in Sound Design for Terra Nova.
In April, Cassy headed to Washington D.C. to compete in the national competition for her 2007 sound design production of Terra Nova. Cassy, as a junior, worked for the UW-Whitewater Theatre/Dance Department as an Assistant Stage Manager for Peter Pan and as Stage Manager for Miles Gloriosus, both of which were presented in the spring of 2007.
The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival hosts a national competition where design students from participating colleges submit their work; everything from sets to music to lights are reviewed and judged. Judging is based on the artistic quality, the concept behind the design, as well as how well the design applies to the production. Cassy presented her design in December 2007 at the regional level, competing against mostly graduate students in Region III; which includes the states of Wisconsin, Illinois Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
"Three people really were my support for even entering in the competition. In separate but equal ways Jim Butchart, Steve Chené, and Tom Colwin advised my design, my mentality and my knowledge on sound design as well as The American College Theatre festival. It was their continuous confidence in my work as well as myself that gave me the chance I couldn't believe was possible." - Cassandra Shillo
