Multimedia Digital Arts-Communication cont'd...
Required core classes include multimedia classes and a video class. In these classes, you’ll learn programs like Adobe Photoshop, Flash, and Premiere Pro (or Final Cut), all industry standards in the field of multimedia. The first two classes in this major provide an introduction to Photoshop and basic HTML coding. The following multimedia classes build on this, teaching more advanced HTML and some JavaScript, and then going on to teach Adobe Flash. In addition to these classes, you can choose between audio production and publication photography, several art-studio classes, two computer science classes, and more.
The Multimedia Major requires 42 credits to complete, and requires a minor or 2nd major. Some related minors include journalism, advertising, information technology, and art. UW-Whitewater offers a wide variety of minors; you could also choose a minor in an unrelated field of interest to expand your career options. A Multimedia major allows you to pursue a wide variety of career options. Please see the article “I’ve got my major, now I need a career” for more information.
In many cases, people who pursue a multimedia major do so because it relates to their personal interests. After all, the ideal career is one you actually enjoy. Personal interests related to the field of multimedia include web design, web production, working with computers, photography, video production, audio production, and graphic design. Because UW-Whitewater’s multimedia major is so broad, it’s possible to emphasize in one area while still studying the other two.
Many people, such as junior Danielle Calkins, prefer the web design and production component of the multimedia major. “I love being able to design a website to look exactly how I had envisioned it,” Calkins said.
Others, like sophomore Richard Fosness, prefer audio production classes. When asked what his favorite part of the multimedia major is, Richard replied, “[Professor] Jeff Herriot’s Fundamentals of Audio Production and Advanced Audio Techniques classes are the best!” This major makes it possible for you to study all three major communications technology, emphasizing one or blending all three to create a complete multimedia experience.
Once you’ve declared a multimedia major, a 2.5 GPA in three of the four classes Introduction to Multimedia, Multimedia Aesthetics, Fundamentals of Video Production, and Multimedia Production I, is required to continue in the major. A minimum GPA of 2.25 in the major is required to graduate with a Multimedia Digital Arts major.
