Electronic Media
The Electronic Media major is part of UW-Whitewater’s Communication Department’s speech program. It combines classes in video production and audio production, with a strong focus on television and radio, with a variety of communication classes. Core courses for Electronic Media include Foundations of Electronic Media, Fundamentals of Video Production, and Fundamentals of Audio Production. Whether or not you have previous experience, these classes will teach you about the origins of electronic media, video production skills, such as filming and editing, and audio production techniques.Students will also learn industry standard software programs, like Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut. The Electronic Media major provides hands-on experience as well, through radio practicum, and practicum in cable television production. Students will have the opportunity to work at the on-campus radio station, and in the cable television station, as an announcer or behind the scenes as a technician.
There is also a course in producing and directing, as well as several advanced video and audio courses, such as Advertising Video Production, Corporate and Industrial Video Production, and Advanced Audio Techniques. Other class options include Electronic Media Announcing, New Communication Technologies, Nonverbal Communication, Psychology of Speech, and more. If you’re interested in working in television, radio, or a related field, this is probably the major for you. Whether you want to become a newscaster, radio announcer, or work behind the scenes, the wide variety of class choices lets you take the courses that fit your career goals.
Senior Don Kindle said, “I chose Electronic Media to basically learn how to make videos and television shows.” His “major goal is to run and own a video production business and ultimately go into film making.”
With the Electronic Media major, you can choose to study audio, video, or a combination of the two. There are also internships and other professional opportunities available with this major. The Electronic Media major requires 37 credits to complete, and a minor or 2nd major is required. You could choose a related minor/2nd major, like Journalism, Advertising, or Multimedia, or something completely different that would increase your employment options. You need a 2.25 GPA to declare this major, and a 2.25 GPA within the major to graduate.
