Possessed of “pianistic fire” and “eloquent playing” (The News-Gazette), pianist Bomi Lim Tunstall has been active in Chicago, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. Solo competition credits include major prizes from the Eleventh Biennial International Beethoven Sonata Competition, the Society of American Musicians Competition, the Chicago Piano Duo Competition, and first prize from the 23rd Krannert Debut Artists Competition, which resulted in her debut CD featuring the works of Rachmaninov, Debussy, and Beethoven. She studied solo performance with William Heiles and Benjamin Pasternack, pedagogy with Reid Alexander and Cathy Albergo, and chamber music with members of the Pacifica Quartet and Peabody Trio. She has taken masterclasses with Leon Fleisher, Charles Rosen, Boris Berman, Awadagin Pratt, and as an orchestral pianist performed with Sinfonia da Camera, directed by Ian Hobson.

Tunstall holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and Graduate Performance Diploma from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, and Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During these years she received graduate teaching assistantships and full scholarships. Her keen interest in pedagogy led to a second master’s degree in piano pedagogy and in-depth training at the Institute for Jacque-Dalcroze Education, the Chicago Suzuki Institute, and the Greater Philadelphia Suzuki Institute. She was recognized as an Educational Foundation Music Scholar by William Rainey Harper College and recently authored an article for Clavier Companion Journal.

Dr. Tunstall currently teaches at Stevenson High School and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and maintains an active private studio. She was previously on the piano faculty at Peabody Institute (Preparatory), Levine School of Music, and Frostburg State University as a lecturer of music and collaborative pianist. Dr. Tunstall is a MTNA nationally certified teacher of music.
