The UW-W Piano Trio will survey the complete piano trios of the Bohemian master Antonín Dvorák in their two Mosaics programs. The first installment begins with his youthful Op.21 Trio in B-flat Major, the most lighthearted of the four, and music which adapts the Bohemian dance forms that Dvorák heard as a child. Dvorák subtitled the Op. 90 Trio in E Minor "Dumky," which translates from the Czech as "fleeting thoughts." The last and most popular of his trios, it is also the most spontaneous in its form: six movements infused with Bohemian musical character and a variety of moods.

Pianist Myung Hee Chung presents two monumental works in this program. J.S. Bach's sets of Partitas for solo keyboard are among the last and greatest works in the grand tradition of Baroque dance suites. The Partita No.2 in C minor is six movements that range in mood from the solemn opening to the blazing final Capriccio. Prokofiev's late Sonata No.8 is the work of a mature composer and pianist at the peak of his powers. The long, lyrical first movement spins out a single idea over a vast musical space. After a sweet, almost romantic second movement, the conclusion is angular and aggressive.

Celebrate Valentine's Day with completion of the Dvorák cycle and the two most romantic of the composer's trios. His Op. 26 Trio in G minor is a youthful and lyrical work, whose heart is a long, soulful Largo. The Op. 65 Trio in F minor is one of the landmark works for this combination: an ambitious four-movement piece that is virtually a symphony played by three instruments—mammoth, tragic, and full of beautiful and exotic modulations.

Celebrate the end of a cold Wisconsin winter with some sizzling and lively chamber music. The premiere of Christian Ellenwood's Quintet will showcase the lush and dramatic instrumental colors of flute, clarinet, viola, cello, and piano. The program will also feature Robert Muczynski's Fantasy Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano—a work described by Fanfare Magazine as a "jumpin' and jiving" piece that "delivers the goods American style." Beethoven's Serenade in D Major, scored for the unusual combination of flute, violin, and viola, will bring some springtime warmth to the Light Recital Hall.
