Degree Programs

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Department of Music offers a variety of programs to suit your personal or career goals in music.

Undergraduate Majors

The Bachelor of Music degree is a professional degree intended for those preparing to teach, perform, or pursue advanced study in music at the graduate level. Students in the B.M. select one of five different areas of emphasis (Choral Music Education, General Music Education, Instrumental Music Education, Performance, History/Theory), according to their specific career goals.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music degree is a liberal arts degree with a flexible program of study and a required minor in another discipline.

Undergraduate Minor

The Music Minor is a 23 credit program for those interested in pursuing additional study in music along with a major in another area. Note that, as of Fall 2011, any student declaring a Music Minor is required to pass an audition to be retained in the program.

Students pursuing a Music Major or Music Minor must audition and be accepted by the Music Department as either a singer or instrumentalist (brass, woodwind, percussion, string or piano.) If you are uncertain about which degree program would be right for you and would like to talk to an advisor, please contact us at 800-621-8744.

undergrad Certificates

The Music Department also offers two Certificates. These are 12-credit elective programs which can be added on to existing degrees and which address particular skills useful to musicians beyond their study at UWW.

Post-Baccaluareate Certification

We frequently accommodate students who have already received music degrees who seek certification or additional certification to teach music in the public schools. Every case is different, and students will generally be working with the Coordinator of Music Education (Prof. Holmes) to lay out a program of coursework.
