Department of Music
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Department of Music offers a variety of programs to suit your personal or career goals in music. Students pursuing a Music Major or Music Minor must audition and be accepted by the Music Department as either a singer or instrumentalist (brass, woodwind, percussion, string or piano.) If you are uncertain about which degree program would be right for you and would like to talk to an advisor, please contact us at 800-621-8744, or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Bachelor of Arts in Music (BA) degree is a liberal arts degree with a flexible program of study and a required minor in another discipline
The Bachelor of Music (BM) degree is a professional degree intended for those preparing to teach or perform, or to pursue advanced study in music at the graduate level. Students in the BM select one of the following areas of emphasis, according to their specific career goals.
UW-Whitewater has a nationally-recognized program in Music Education, with a high rate of job placement for our graduates. (See a brief video on our Music Education program.) Successful completion of the BM degree will allow students to secure licensure to teach K-12 music in Wisconsin, licensure which is relatively easily transferrable to most states. There are three emphases a student may pursue:
Instrumental Emphasis: designed for those students who seek a teaching license for elementary, middle school and high school band or orchestra. This is often combined with K-12 licensure in General Music. Download degree requirements
Choral Emphasis: designed for those students who seek a teaching license for elementary, middle school and high school choir. This is usually combined with K-12 licensure in General Music. Download degree requirements
General Emphasis: designed for those students who seek a teaching license for General Music in the elementary or middle school setting, and high school classes in non-ensemble settings (Music Appreciation, Music Technology, Music Theory). This can be combined with K-12 licensure in Choral or Instrumental Music. Download degree requirements
The BM in Performance is a comprehensive professional degree for those students preparing for a career in performance, private teaching or graduate study in music performance. There are three emphases a student may pursue:
The BM in Theory/Composition provides intensive training in Music Theory, Arranging, and Composition, with additional electives in Music History and World Music, and in music research.
The Music Minor is a 23-credit program for those interested in pursuing additional study in music along with a major in another area. Note that any student declaring a Music Minor is required to pass an audition to be retained in the program.
The Music Department also offers four Certificates. These are 12-credit elective programs which can be added on to existing degrees and which address particular skills useful to musicians beyond their degree coursework at UWW.
We frequently accommodate students who have already received music degrees who seek licensure or additional licensure to teach music in the public schools. Every case is different, and students will generally be working with the Coordinator of Music Education, Prof. Holmes to lay out a program of coursework.
