Areas of Emphasis

Students in the Bachelor of Music degree may select one of five different areas of emphasis:

Instrumental Music Education Emphasis

A comprehensive professional degree designed for those who seek a teaching license for elementary, middle school and high school band or orchestra. Often combined with K-12 licensure in General Music. 

Choral Music Education Emphasis

A comprehensive professional degree designed for those who seek a teaching license for middle school and high school choral music. Usually combined with K-12 licensure in General Music. 

General Music Education Emphasis

A comprehensive professional degree designed for those who seek K-12 licensure to teach General Music in the elementary or middle school setting, and high school classes in non-ensemble settings (Music Appreciation, Music Technology, Music Theory). Most students combine this with Instrumental or Choral certification.

Students whose primary instrument is piano or guitar may also seek Intrumental/General or Choral/General Licensure. Requirements for thse students vary slightly:

Performance Emphasis

A comprehensive professional degree for those students preparing for a career in performance, private teaching or graduate study in music performance.

History-Theory Emphasis

A comprehensive professional degree for those who are preparing to enter graduate school in music history, music theory, or composition.
