What do I need to do to become a music major at UW-Whitewater?
To become a music major you must do two things. First, you must be admitted to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater through the regular admission process. (Click here for information on UWW admission requirements.) Second, you must audition for the UWW music faculty and be accepted into a music major degree progam. Where can I get audition application forms and materials?
The easiest way is to download them from the Admission audition Information pages on the Music Department website. You can also call the Music Department at 800-621-8744 and request that audition application materials be mailed to you at your home addresss. You may also stop by the Music Office (Greenhill Center of the Arts, room 2038) and pick them up when you are on campus for our October Music Department Open House, Junior Audition Day in April, or other event.

What will happen at my audition?
At your audition you will perform music that you have prepared for a committee of music faculty members who will evaluate your performance and assess your musicianship and preparation for college-level music study. Specific requirements (repertoire, scales, sight-reading, etc.) vary by area and are detailed in the audition application materials that you received. You will also be asked to take a short music theory examination to assess your background and previous training, and a member of the piano faculty will interview you about your previous piano study, if any. These are intended to provide information to help assess your potential for success as a music major and to assist with your first semester course selection.

Approximately one week after your audition, you will receive a letter from us indicating whether you have been accepted as a music major, and the degree program you may pursue. This letter will also indicate whether you will be under consideration for a music department scholarship. (Scholarship awards are announced in April.)

If you are accepted as a music major you will attend one of the university's Summer Preview Sessions and meet with a music faculty member who will assist you with selection of your first semester classes.

Are there scholarships available for new music majors?
Yes! In addition to scholarships and awards that are available to any UW Whitewater student, the Music Department awards thousands of dollars to new, incoming freshman music majors each year. These awards are based on the results of your performance audition and an evaluation of your letters of reference, high school academic performance, ACT scores, and your previous musical experience and training. A faculty committee uses this information to assess your potential for success in college level music study.

Shortly after your audition we will send you a letter indicating whether you are among those being considered for a music department scholarship. Music Scholarship offers are sent by letter to all awardees in April.
