How to join a choir

All UW-Whitewater Choirs are open to all students, regardless of major. While most choirs do not require an audition, Chamber Singers and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble require a formal audition process. To join a non-auditioned choir (Concert Choir, Meistersingers Men's Chorus, Women's Chorale, or Gospel Choir) simply register for the choir you wish to join on WINS, and show up to the first day of class. In order to join Chamber Singers or Vocal Jazz Ensemble you must sing a formal audition (described below).

Non-Auditioned Choirs

Concert Choir, Meistersingers, Mixed Chorus and Women's Chorale

  • During the first few class sessions, the conductor will ask everyone to sing a five-minute voice placement session. You will be expected to match pitch and sing a few easy exercises to demonstrate your vocal range and your ability to remember simple melodies. This is not an audition, and the atmosphere is friendly and supportive. The placement sessions help the conductor decide what vocal section you should sing in (soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, or bass) and allow the conductor to get to know you and your voice individually.

Gospel Choir

  • Gospel Choir does not require an audition.

Auditioned Choirs

Chamber Singers and Vocal Jazz Ensemble

  • Though these choirs are open to all students regardless of major, Chamber Singers and Vocal Jazz Ensemble require a formal audition that includes sight singing and a short prepared piece (piece must be in Jazz or Broadway style for Vocal Jazz Ensemble). Auditions are held during the first three days of the semester. Sign up for an audition time outside Center of the Arts room 1003 (just to the right of the main entrance of the building).
