The UWW Jazz Ensemble is a modern big band directed by Matt Sintchak, and consists of 4-5 trumpets, 4-5 trombones, two altos, two tenors, baritone sax, piano, bass guitar, and drums. The main function of the Jazz Ensemble is to provide UWW students with the opportunity to rehearse and perform the challenging literature of the modern big band. Typical literature selections include works by: Thad Jones, Ernie Wilkens, Tom Kubis, Duke Ellington, Slide Hampton, Maria Schneider, Jim McNeely, and original works by educators Bret Zvacek, Denis Diblasio, Neil Slater, Glenn Kostur, Frank Mantooth, and Steve Wiest.
The group has also worked with many Guest Artists throughout the years as a wonderful educational and performance opportunity. The Jazz Ensemble has performed with a number of guest artists including, most recently, Ed Shaunessey and Bob Mintzer. The UWW Jazz Ensemble has performed clinics and concerts all across Wisconsin and northern Illinois and regularly takes part in the prestigious Elmhurst College Jazz Festival where the group has received numerous soloist and ensemble awards.
Entrance into the UWW Jazz Ensemble is by audition only, and is open to all UW-Whitewater students.
