J. Michael Allsen

Prof. Allsen teaches Music History I (Medieval/Renaissance) and several World Music and General Studies courses offered by the Music Department. He has several published musicological articles, editions, and reviews to his credit, and has contributed to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
, to its German counterpart Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart
, and to several other reference works. An active program annotaor, Allsen has written program notes for the Madison Symphony Orchestra and several other orchestras. He has also authored feature articles on local music history for the Wisconsin State Journal
. An active performer, he is bass trombonist with the Madison Symphony Orchestra and freelances with other classical and jazz ensembles in Wisconsin. Allsen received the College of Arts and Communication Excellence Award for teaching in 1998 and 2005, in 2004 he received the College's Excellence Award for research, and in 2009 he received the College's Excellence Award for academic advising. Since 2001, he has served as an artist-in-residence (sackbut) and music historian at the Madison Early Music Festival.
