Biography

Mezzo Julie Cross has performed with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Chautauqua Institution, South Beach Chamber Ensemble, Ann Arbor Art Song Festival, and other performing groups and recital venues throughout the United States. While living in New York City, she sang professionally with the St. Bartholemews Episcopal Choir.Her performance of Aunt Hannah in William Mayers opera A Death in the Family was recorded on the Albany Records label. Other opera roles include Madame Pernelle in Mechems Tartuffe, the Mother and the Witch (Hansel and Gretel), La Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica), Zita (Gianni Schicchi), Mrs. Grose (Turn of the Screw), Baba (The Medium), Gertrude (Romeo et Juliette), and Aunt Sue (Slow Dusk).
 
Dr. Cross was one of twelve teachers chosen nationally to be a 2007 intern with the National Association of Teachers of Singing.Dedicated to the performance and promotion of new music, she serves on the Board of Directors of the International Alliance for Women in Music.Before coming to Whitewater, she taught at Barry University, Florida International University, and the University of Michigan. She presents recitals and master classes in colleges throughout the country.Her degrees are from Oberlin Conservatory (B.M.), Manhattan School of Music (M.M.), and the University of Michigan (D.M.A.), and she has studied additionally at the Centro Studi Italiani in Urbania, Italy and the Summer Language Institute (German) at the University of Michigan.Her voice teachers were Daune Mahy, Hilda Harris, Marlena Malas, George Shirley, and Shirley Verrett.
