Biography

Dr. Tanya Schwoch directs the University of Wisconsin Whitewater Symphony and Chamber Orchestras and teaches the Elementary Instrumental String Methods, String Pedagogy and String Techniques classes. Her mentors have included Dr. James Kjelland and Karol Johnson at the University of North Texas and most recently Dr. Robert Gillespie at The Ohio State University. Her experience includes a successful public school teaching career in Colorado and Texas where her orchestras have received numerous awards for their excellence at state and regional competitions. She has also been a sought after clinician and adjudicator working with city and regional youth orchestras.

While working on her doctorate Tanya Schwoch held the position of Assistant Conductor for the Columbus Youth Symphony’s Chamber Strings, Co-founded the Ohio State University’s Beginning Experience Freshman and Community Orchestras and piloted the Grandview Heights String Project.

Tanya Schwoch has studied viola with Dr. George Papich and Dr. Susan Dubois at the University of North Texas and Dr. Catherine Carroll at The Ohio State University. She has been a member of several professional orchestras since 1990 including the Irving Symphony, Abilene Philharmonic and Opera Orchestras, Wichita Falls Symphony, Gilbert and Sullivan Company, Colorado Springs Civic and Chamber Orchestras, Newark-Granville Symphony, Central Ohio Symphony and most recently the Festival Orchestra in Eisenstadt Austria. She has also been invited to perform with several contemporary music ensembles including the North Texas Jazz Strings Ensemble, OSU Jazz Integration Project with Sean “Thunder” Wallace and the Port Clinton Arts Festival where she helped to premier several modern works for string ensemble. In 2004 Dr. Schwoch was inducted into the Alpha Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society and professional memberships include MENC, College Music Society and ASTA.
