Susan Chandler to Present at National ASTA Conference
This session will include helpful tips on how to include electric strings in the acoustic orchestra setting. Participants will be invited to join the UW-W demonstration musicians for a reading session of string orchestra arrangements that have proven to be highly effective in this genre.
New Alternative Styles Class
A new class called Alternative Styles has been added as an elective to the UWW string curriculum. The class has already proven popular amongst not only violinists, but also players of viola, cello, string bass, guitar, drum set and piano. Students will have access to a full set of Yamaha electric string instruments. The string department at UWW is one of the first universities in Midwest to add an alternative styles class to it's curriculum to better prepare students for the growing trend of alternative styles playing in public education string programs.
Concerto Winners - UWW
Jonathan Bernhardt, flute, will solo with the Chamber Orchestra on February 12. Nicholas Zoulek, alto saxophone, and Mallory Bray, violin, will solo with the Symphonic Orchestra on March 13 and May 1 respectively.
Concerto Winner - HS
Isaac Bershady will perform the Hayden cello concerto with the Chamber Orchestra on May 1.
League wins WiASTA Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award
UW-W violin professor Leanne League was recently named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the Wisconsin chapter of ASTA. League is known at UW-W for her ability to instantly notice even the smallest details about a student's playing, and to formulate precise suggestions for improvement. UW-W is the only institution to boast two winners of this award, for Susan Chandler was the winner in 2007.
Whitcomb Releases New Book
UW-W cello professor Benjamin Whitcomb's new book, The Advancing Cellist's Handbook, is now available through online bookstores. Whitcomb, a recent recipient of one of ASTA's Citations for Leadership and Merit, is currently working on making sibling volumes of this book for each of the other bowed string instruments.
Cello Festival
The string department at UW-Whitewater sponsors an annual Cello Festival. The event is open to high school and middle school players. Dr. Benjamin Whitcomb, professor of cello, offers a wide range of music and technique classes. The event attract a large number of participants. High School Orchestra Festival
The string department at UW-Whitewater sponsors an annual festival for high school orchestras. The High School Orchestra festival attracts a large number of orchestras from Wisconsin as well as out of state orchestras. The clinicians for the event are the directors of the UW-Whitewater Symphonic Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. In addition to the clinic, participating orchestras also receive technique classes from the UWW string faculty. Middle School Orchestra Festival
The string department at UW-Whitewater sponsors an annual festival for middle school orchestras. The Middle School Orchestra Festival attracts a large number of orchestras from Wisconsin. The clinicians for the event are the directors of the UW-Whitewater Symphonic Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra. In addition to the clinic, participating orchestras also receive technique classes from the UWW string faculty. High School Concerto Competition
The string department at UW-Whitewater sponsors an annual concerto competition for high school string players. The winner of the concerto competition will perform their concerto with the UWW Symphonic Orchestra during the spring concert. UWW Concerto Competition
The string department at UW-Whitewater sponsors an annual concerto competition open UWW string, wind and percussion players. Up to three winners are chosen by the directors of the UWW Symphony and Chamber Orchestras to perform their concertos with either the WSO or WCO. High School Orchestra Summer Camp
