There are many outstanding opportunities for string players at UW-Whitewater. In addition to the University Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra there are numerous chamber music possibilities including string quartets, early music ensemble, and alternative styles quartets/ensembles. Music Education students recieve many opportunities for furthering their teaching experience through assisting with our many string events and teaching at the String Academy (providing not only hands on teaching experience, but also extra income).
Musicians at UW-Whitewater receive a first-rate education from our highly lauded faculty of 34 outstanding musicians. Our department was recently nominated for the statewide Regents Excellence Award, a very rare and prestigious honor. Additionally, UW-Whitewater has great facilities and hosts many string-related activities through the academic year.
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater does not offer graduate degrees in music, making it an ideal place for undergraduate study. Undergrads won't need to worry about competing for positions in our orchestras and ensembles with graduate students who have much more experience. Likewise, undergrads will not study with graduate teaching assistants, they will study directly with members of our fine string faculty.
Music degrees offered at UW-Whitewater include Bachelor of Music Degrees in Music Education, Music History/Theory, and Music Performance as well as a Bachelor of Arts Degree. All music majors and minors will study their primary instruments with our performance faculty. Although the orchestras are made up of predominantly music majors and minors at UW-Whitewater, many talented Symphony members do have majors outside of the school of music.
