Personal conflicts, sexual drama and near-death experiences are at the heart of modern-day soap operas. The Coronation of Poppea could be called one of the first soap operas, for it includes all of these and more, set to beautiful music. The Italian opera tells the story of the Roman Emperor Nero and his mistress, Poppea. Before Poppea can be crowned Empress, Nero needs to get rid of his current wife, Ottavia, who wishes to protect her powerful position. Will Nero be able to install Poppea as his new empress, or will the jealous Ottavia prevail? Modern soap operas will seem tame when compared to this operatic adventure.
