Piano Celebration

Until this year, one of the Music Department's most pressing needs was for new pianos. Due to an initiative by Chancellor Telfer and Provost Kopper, the department was able to purchase 31 new Steinway and Boston pianos. A magnificent Steinway D 9-foot concert grand for the Recital Hall will serve as the department's "flagship" instrument. The new concert grand will be dedicated at the first Music Mosaics concert of the 2011-12 season.

Turtle Island Quartet will be performing the innovative program Have You Ever Been? - The music of Jimi Hendrix and David Balakrishnan. Through their exploration of jazz, classical, American vernacular and world music styles, the Turtle Island Quartet (TIQ) has taken its audiences on a journey through many musical genres, eras, and places. Now the two time GRAMMY®-winning quartet ventures to Electric Ladyland, tackling works by legendary guitarist, songwriter and performer Jimi Hendrix, inspired by Hendrix's music and TIQ founder David Balakrishnan's new composition Tree of Life. This is not your Papa's starched string quartet program; TIQ has a definite wow factor!
