Bach Suite Cycle
Benjamin Whitcomb
November 13, 2011 - 7:30 pm - Light Recital Hall
Bach's six suites for unaccompanied cello are by far the most important Baroque works for the cello, and have influenced generations of cellists and composers. Written while Bach was a court musician in the provincial city of Cöthen, they are in the traditional form of dance suites: each a series of popular dances, headed by a free prelude. But there was nothing conventional about Bach's music, which calls for virtuosity and expressive playing, and which frequently evokes subtle counterpoint within a single line! This program is a rare chance to hear all six suites in a single program.

Whitewater Piano Trio
Leanne League, violin; Benjamin Whitcomb, cello; and Myung Hee Chung, piano
February 7, 2012 - 7:30 pm - Light Recital Hall
The Whitewater Piano Trio presents a pair of masterworks for violin, cello, and piano. The Trio in B minor, Op. 8 was one of the works with which a 21-year-old Brahms made a resounding impact on the musical scene-and Brahms himself thought enough of the work that he came back to revise it nearly 40 years later. Beethoven also wrote piano trios as a very young man but Op.70, No.2 of 1809 heard here is the work of a mature composer, writing during the most prolific period of his career.

Chamber Music for Strings & Winds
Robin Fellows, flute; Christian Ellenwood, clarinet; Leanne League, violin; Christopher Dozoryst, viola; and Benjamin Whitcomb, cello
April 3, 2012 - 7:30 pm - Light Recital Hall
This concluding program features a works for mixed ensembles, Max Reger's Serenade for Flute, Violin and Viola, Op.141a, one of this Romantic composer's final works, and one which reaches back to the style of Beethoven. Mozart's Flute Quartet in C Major, K385b is one of a series of chamber works for flute and strings Mozart composed while still a young man. While this was written on commission for a talented amateur flutist, it is an inspired and vivacious piece that presents wonderful musical moments for all four players.
