Cello and Piano Recital Strikes a Chord in September
UW-Whitewater Department of Music faculty Benjamin Whitcomb, cello and MyungHee Chung, piano will begin the semester with a recital of sonatas. Tuesday, September 9 at 7:30 pm the Light Recital Hall in the Greenhill Center of the Arts will host its first recital of the semester. For tickets call 262-472-2222.
The recital featuring the Whitcomb/Chung duo will present Mendelssohn’s Sonata in D Major, Op. 58, Shostakovich’s Sonata in D Minor, Op. 40 and a sonata by Francois Poulenc. Although these three sonatas come from different countries and time periods, they share many elements in common, such as form, lyrical melodies, and optimistic moods.
Dr. Benjamin Whitcomb, Assistant Professor of Cello and Music Theory, joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1999. Dr. Whitcomb performs frequently in solo and chamber music recitals and is Associate Principal cellist of the Madison Symphony and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. He has also been a member of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Austin Lyric Opera Orchestra, and several regional orchestras in Texas and Wisconsin. Dr. Whitcomb holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Music Theory and a Master of Music degree in Cello Performance from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Music degree in Cello Performance from Oklahoma State University.
Born in Korea, Dr. MyungHee Chung starting playing the piano at the age of 4 and won prestigious national competitions in Korea by the age of 10. She came to the United States at 17 to study under Tong-Il Han and later attended the Juilliard School in New York on scholarship, studying with Martin Canin, and received her B.M. and M.M. degrees. Her D.M.A. degree is from Manhattan School of Music in New York, where she studied with renowned pianist Gary Graffman. She has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe, Mexico, and the Far East and has performed with many major orchestras including the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Baltimore, and Portland, as well as the New Philharmonic and Seoul Philharmonic. In August 1995, she joined the faculty at UW-Whitewater as an Associate Professor.
