General Cover Letter Writing Guidelines

  • Use a standard business letter format.
  • In the first paragraph, state the position you are applying for, how you found out about it, and why you are interested in the position and the employer.
  • In the body paragraph(s), write about your strongest qualifications for the position. Be specific, and use examples. Make the connection between your skills, your background, and the position.
  • In the final paragraph, ask for an interview, give your contact information, and thank the reader for his or her time and consideration. If you plan to follow up with a phone call, clearly indicate when you will be in contact with the person.
