Hawk Internship Program (HIP)
The Hawk Internship Program (HIP), coordinated by UW-Whitewater Career & Leadership Development, serves as a centralized listing of internship opportunities in the Walworth, Rock, and Jefferson County area. The program seeks to provide UW-Whitewater students with more access to internships, present a direct opportunity for regional employers to connect to the university, and benefit economic development in our communities by showing current students (future members of the "young, college-educated workforce") that there are employment opportunities here.
Get Involved in HIP
It is easy for your organization to get involved in this great program:
- Contact Laura Jacobs, Internship Coordinator, at (262) 472-1606 or MorrowL@uww.edu regarding your interest and to request a Development Packet.
- Develop an internship position (general guidelines for positions are listed below).
- If your organization has not offered an internship before, develop a new position using the resources available here. You may also consult with Laura for assistance with the position development process, which is especially helpful if you aren't sure what your organization might offer to students. Ultimately, it will be the responsibility of your organization to create the position, write its description, and hire an intern.
- If your organization has offered an internship before, consider submitting the existing position for inclusion in this new program.
- Submit your internship position for consideration by completing the Internship Site Data Sheet and Internship Position Description Form from the Development Packet. Mail, fax, or email the forms to Laura. Please note the submission deadlines listed below!
- Staff will review the submitted position to ensure that it is structured well and will provide a quality career development experience. If approved for the program, you will be notified and the position information will be made available to students. If not immediately approved, Laura will work with you to review and revise the position in order for it to be approved.
- Each internship site will be responsible for conducting its own hiring process.
For an internship position to qualify for HIP, it must meet the following general guidelines:
- The internship work site is located in Walworth, Jefferson, or Rock County.
- The internship position's qualifications should focus on the relevant skill sets necessary for the intern to possess in order to successfully complete the work*.
- The internship position is paid at a rate of approximately $10 an hour. Funding assistance may be available to help employers develop paid positions**.
- A summer internship opportunity is either a part-time position at 20 work hours per week or full-time at 40 work hours per week; a fall or spring internship opportunity is a part-time position at a minimum of 10 work hours per week to a maximum of 20 work hours per week.
- A summer internship opportunity is approximately 12 weeks in duration; a fall or spring internship opportunity is approximately 15 weeks in duration.
- The internship position is structured well and will provide a quality career development experience, as determined by Career & Leadership Development staff.
* It is recommended that the internship position not be limited to students in a specific major(s). Please contact Laura if you have a specific need to limit the position's qualifications by major.
** It is Career & Leadership Development's intent to help fund employers/internship sites that may not be able to afford hosting an intern, thereby providing our students with more access to internships. Funding assistance amounts will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis in accordance with availability. If funding assistance is provided for a position, the position must ONLY be available to UW-Whitewater students. Contact Laura for more information on funding assistance.

Hawk Internship Program Vision
The UW-Whitewater Hawk Internship Program (HIP), sponsored by Career & Leadership Development, provides career development internships for the university's undergraduate students. These internships may or may not relate to students' majors, but do relate to their career goals. The program, open to students from all majors, links students and local employers for career-related experiences that will make graduates more marketable in their future job searches.
HIP is designed to:
- Assist undergraduate students in identifying and pursuing career development internships.
- Provide undergraduate students with access to internship opportunities in Whitewater and the surrounding communities.
- Educate students on all available campus internship resources and help them identify the internship opportunities that fit their goals.
- Provide employers with resources for creating internship opportunities and accessing UW-Whitewater students.
Students develop skills and knowledge through a variety of activities, not just through their majors. And in fact, very few careers require a specific undergraduate major. One of the most important factors in obtaining a job after graduation becomes the experience a student gains through opportunities like internships. One goal of HIP is to provide broad access to internship opportunities that focus on the skills necessary for success in the internship and enable students to gain important career-related experience.
HIP also serves as a gateway to opportunities in local communities, benefiting students who want to stay close and enhancing economic development in the region.
